Visual Illusions

The above animation was ray traced by pointing the virtual camera into a kaleidoscope formed from three triangular mirrors. Towards th eapex where the three mirrors meet is a segment of a sphere on which a fractal picture is projected. The animation is created by moving the fractal picture in a similar way to which patterns are produced in toy kaleidoscopes. The kaleidoscope has icosahedral symmetry.

In the above animation the camera translates through a honeycomb of cuboctahedra and octahedra. The honeycomb has been ray traced by placing the virtual camera within a virtual tetrahedral kaleidoscope formed from four almost perfect mirrors. All but two of the edges shown in the animation are reflections in these mirrors.
